The Story Line
Step into the world of Roxy, a high school student navigating significant challenges with emotional regulation and behavior. As the daughter of a former NBA star, she carries a legacy that contrasts sharply with the turmoil surrounding her. Her single mother, burdened by unresolved emotional trauma, struggles to maintain a stable relationship with her, creating constant tension at home.
Despite these obstacles, Roxy is committed to personal growth. When an unexpected relocation arises, the timing feels almost necessary. Removed from the fast-paced, socially complex environment of Houston, she finds herself in a small Indiana town where life operates under far tighter constraints. The shift from near-total freedom to a semi-restrictive setting marks the beginning of a profound transformation—one that forces Roxy to confront her past, her identity, and the future she hopes to build.
Roxy has never had an easy grip on her emotions, but she’s learned to survive on instinct alone. Gone are the distractions, the anonymity, the escape routes. What remains is a peaceful, controlled environment where every choice feels magnified. However, the better things get for her, the harder things become for the family.
Inspiration
"Loosely based on a fabricated story...." This is Andre Buckner's favorite way to describe his book series.
Andre grew up in a small town (Hopkinsville, Kentucky); he played basketball at Duke (Durham, North Carolina); and as a young adult, Andre traveled the country with his older brothers Mauryio & Greg - who was an NBA player at the time. Andre reflects on the times he spent operating within the inner circles of many NBA stars, and interacting in various social settings from pick-up games, to dinners, to family gatherings, to night clubs.
"I'm blessed to have had a chance to be around some very successful people. Through that, I've noticed that most successful people love to tell stories whether about themselves or about others. So most of the time in those environments, I'd find myself just listening, observing, and reflecting. This is what drives my creativity."
